Sustainable practice: Atlas Copco hand in hand to Tesla

If Tesla's mission is to accelerate the transformation of global transportation to sustainable development, Atlas Copco's mission is to ensure that Tesla electric vehicle has an efficient assembly line. All the key threaded fasteners of the Tesla car are installed by the tools provided by Atlas Copco. Tesla has a lot of differences with most other American carmakers.

First of all, Tesla only produces electric cars. Second, these electric cars are not from the city of Detroit or in the vicinity of the city. The three major automobile giants -- Ford, Chrysler and general motors -- set up their headquarters here, and the environmental protection new automobile company was born and grew up in the US Silicon Valley. By observing the chassis, more differences can be found.

Unlike traditional gasoline internal combustion engines with hundreds of moving parts, the motor of Tesla Motors has only one moving part, rotor, so it can instantly accelerate. Thanks to the "absurd acceleration mode" (LudicrousMode), Model S has become one of the fastest accelerating cars in the market, accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds, Atlas Copco business development manager Elvis Jagat said. Since the 2012 launch of ultimate ModelS, he has represented the Atlas Copco cooperation with tesla. The ultimate Model S has a built-in 85 kwh battery pack, which officially announced a 426 kilometre extension.

California lacks experience in automobile manufacturing. Elvis Jagat introduced that, in the technology dominated Silicon Valley, the expertise of automobile assembly is very limited, which means that Tesla must rely entirely on Atlas Copco and regard it as a strategic partner to understand assembly operations. When Model S was launched, Atlas Copco was the main supplier of the car fastening tools. "I was involved in the starting phase of the Tesla manufacturing car, and Atlas Copco's support was the key to Tesla's success," Jagat said. Assembly line in close cooperation with Tesla to create a smooth and efficient at the same time, Jagat quickly proved that the assembly tool Atlas Copco than rival products more reliable.

Since 2014, Atlas Copco has provided all the key assembly tools for the assembly, as well as more than 90% non key fasteners for Tesla. About 85% of the factories use the Atlas Copco STB charging series. At present, there are 8 Atlas Copco Service Engineer Tesla production site, they are responsible for ensuring that these tools can operate smoothly in every step of the production process. "Because the Tesla car does not use internal combustion engine, so our tools can be used to assemble all the power integrated in automotive unit and electronic equipment, including assembly 17 Inch Touch screen and the Model S can travel on the road wheels," even in the very narrow parking space, but also through the eagle wing the door for easy access to the second and third rows of seats. "Not to say that all the circuit board connectors are assembled and all the joints are tested in the laboratory," Jagat said. In the automobile industry, in order to control the assembly quality, all a grade joint uses very precise electric tools. If a grade a joint is broken, it may affect the driver and other people around or other vehicles, so the quality is very high. "A car is equipped with more than 200 key joints, we want to make sure that they have 100% traceability," Jagat said, "for the use of our PowerFocus and PowerMacs brand tools all the joint, the torque and angle, results and other information, as well as the date and time stamp of all our tool system, are stored in the toolsNET system in the us."

In 2015, about 50 thousand cars were produced in Tesla, including the latest car, Model X. "Working with Tesla means growing together," Jagat said. "We have witnessed the increase of Tesla's annual production from 15 thousand to 50 thousand. As a global supplier, Atlas Copco can provide consistently excellent solutions for Tesla to start production in any country or region. Through establishing this partnership, we will make progress together with Tesla in all aspects, including Tesla's annual output from 50 thousand vehicles to 100 thousand vehicles. Tesla has planned to increase the available deliveries of Model S and ModelX and plan to launch a new model that is more attractive to the public.
